Bvlgari Sotirio Retrograde: Paying Tribute to the Roots

February 1st, 2010 · No Comments

Bvlgari Sotirio RetrogradeIn order to know where we are going we need to remember where we come from. Apparently, creating a watch collection in tribute to Sotirio Bulgari, who founded the firm in Rome 126 years ago, Bvlgari was guided by these very considerations.

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the Italian company introduced a new timepiece - the Bvlgari Sotirio Retrograde. As its name suggests, the watch was named after the brand’s Greek founder. The designers of the company chose a classic round case for the watch – you can never go wrong with a round case. However, the case is not as simple as it seems at first sight. It is constructed in a unique way, with lugs on the case back in order to provide greater shock resistance. Brushed and glossy, polished surfaces are alternated for aesthetic effect. It is in the smallest details that craftsmanship reveals itself – the crown of the Bvlgari Sotirio Retrograde is monogrammed.

The dial of this slim, elegant watch is also unique. It is decorated with the sunburst pattern, representing the rays of the sunset. The hand-applied Roman numerals, indexes, as well as skeletonized hour and minute hands are faceted. The dial of the timepiece features an in-house 150° retrograde date indicator at 6 o’clock.

The technical of the watch is as interesting as its design. The Bvlgari Sotirio Retrograde is powered by a self-winding manufacture movement, the caliber BVL250. The heart of the watch is assembled entirely by hand and requires 165 operations to be produced. The construction passes quality inspection at each stage, as each component of the movement is added.

Super Thin Timepiece: Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303

January 8th, 2010 · No Comments

Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303The heart of the watch is the movement. Apparently, Bvlgari tried to emphasize this by naming the watch after the movement that beats inside its case – the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303. The movement of the timepiece has a particularly important function. Thanks to its small size, the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303 is the world’s thinnest self-winding watch.

Just 5.5 mm thick and 42mm wide, the round case of the timepiece is made from stainless steel. At first sight, it seems that the bezel of the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303 is also crafted from this material, but, after looking at it attentively, it becomes clear that it is made from white gold. The bezel has the distinctive “Bvlgari” signature engraved across it.

The inside of the case contains the Calibro 303, composed of 303 elements and set with 37 jewels. The movement of the watch is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional – it provides a power reserve of 45 hours and beats 21,600 times per hour, ensuring an immaculate performance of the timepiece. As usual, the movement can be admired through a transparent case back.

But what is truly worth admiring is the dial of the Bvlgari Diagono Calibro 303. It has a three-layer structure with various kinds of finishing. The first layer is a metal base decorated with a sunburst pattern. Then comes the anthracite layer with vertical treatment, and the upper layer is represented by three sub-dials and faceted hand-applied markers.

The hands of the watch, as well as the hour and minute counters at 3 and 9 o’clock are rose-gold toned, while the seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock comes in different colors, depending on the color pattern of the dial.

Bvlgari Sotirio Quantieme Annuel: A Tribute to the Founder of Bvlgari

January 5th, 2010 · No Comments

Bvlgari Sotirio Quantieme AnnuelThere is always a person behind a company, a driving force whose values shape a brand policy. The person behind BVLGARI is Sotirio Bulgari. Having come from Greece to seek his fortune in Italy, the jeweller founded the company which has grown into a multinational luxury brand with a few product lines including handbags, fragrances, accessories, hotels and watches.

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, BVLGARI presented a watch dedicated to the founder of the Bvlgari empire – the Bvlgari Sotirio Quantieme Annuel. Creating this timepiece, the watchmakers of the brand took a more modern approach to the classic style. BVLGARI reinterpreted the formal watch and created something totally new and distinctive. The Bvlgari Sotirio Quantieme Annuel has a traditional round case and a leather strap, but the inside of the case and the dial are not at all traditional and boring.

The timepiece is powered by the BVL 360 Calibre, an in-house movement featuring annual calendar and 225° retrograde date complications. The latter one means that the date hand, moving along a 225° arc, jumps back to “1” at midnight of the last day of each month.

The dial of the Bvlgari Sotirio Quantieme Annuel watch combines different textures. The hand-applied Roman numerals and indexes are faceted, while other elements of the dial have a satin finish-surface. The case of the watch is also treated in different ways to achieve an interesting aesthetic effect. For instance, the case band of the timepiece is brush-finished while the case lugs are highly-polished.

As it is usual for luxury brand products, the number of watches produced is limited. Only 250 pieces are available in pink gold and 125 pieces – in white gold.

Hublot Red Devil Bang II: Fusion of Sports with Fine Watchmaking

January 4th, 2010 · No Comments

Hublot Red Devil Bang II WatchAt first sight, rubber and luxury seem to be incompatible. But it turns out that they can perfectly coexist. The first brand to prove that this is possible was Hublot. Thirty years ago, the company created a gold watch with the first natural rubber strap in the watchmaking history. Since then, rubber elements have become a trademark of the brand.

Naturally, the Hublot Red Devil Bang II features a rubber strap. The watch was created to commemorate the sponsorship deal that Hublot made with the football club Manchester United. Not that it is difficult to guess it by the name of the timepiece – as every football fan knows, the Red Devil is the official mascot of the team.

Both the case and the bezel of the Hublot Red Devil Bang II are made from satin-finish ceramic that makes it feel and look sporty. The unique look of this material is accented by two red bezel lugs on both sides of the case. The hour markers and the Manchester United logo at 3 o’clock are also in red. The bezel of the case features six H-shaped screws that have become a signature of the Hublot Big Bang watch series.

To make more obvious the relations of Hublot with the world of football, the watchmakers of the brand have designed a special 45-minute chronograph counter at 9 o’clock. Using this counter, the owner of the watch can measure one half of a football match.

Hublot has produced a limited number of the Hublot Red Devil Bang II - just five hundred people have become lucky owners of the timepiece. The proceeds from the sale have been used for promoting sports related activities.

Jaeger leCoultre Duometre Power Reserve

January 1st, 2010 · No Comments

Jaeger leCoultre Duometre Power ReservePerhaps, one of the most famous horology complications is chronograph. The first complication of this kind appeared in the 18th century. The elapsed time was recorded in ink on the watch dial by means of a fountain pen at the end of a seconds hand. Clearly, nowadays chronographs are much more sophisticated. Until recently, it even seemed that everything that could be done in this area had already been done. But Jaeger-LeCoultre with its Jaeger leCoultre Duometre Power Reserve has proved that there is still a lot to do in this field.
What makes this timepiece stand out among numerous watches with chronograph mechanisms is a radically new construction of the device. Normally, chronograph and timekeeping functions have the same power source. But making the Jaeger leCoultre Duometre Power Reserve, the watchmakers of the company have managed to separate the chronograph function of the timepiece from the timekeeping one. Using two separate gear trains and power sources, they do not interfere with each other and deliver maximum accuracy.
These two independent watch mechanisms are housed in a classic round case featuring an extremely readable dial. Two sub-dials of the same size are arranged symmetrically around a central timing hand. One with the regular hour and minute hands is positioned at 10 o’clock, while another with the chronograph hour and minute hands is located at 2 o’clock. The dial also features a jumping-seconds counter, indicating one-sixth of a second.
Despite the complexity of the functions of the Jaeger leCoultre Duometre Power Reserve, they are very easy to operate. The chronograph mechanism can be started, stopped and reset by means of a single push piece at 2 o’clock.

Omega Constellation Quartz Chronograph

December 31st, 2009 · No Comments

Omega Constellation Quartz ChronographIn our constantly changing world, it is a wonder when a watchmaking company has a long history of operating. The longevity of a watch series is even more surprising. Omega miraculously managed to do both things. The company was founded in 1848, and the Omega Constellation series has been popular since 1952. The secret of the long-lasting popularity of the collection is quite simple. The design of the watches is constantly updated, and new models often join the Omega Constellation family.
The watch to join the collection in 2007 was the Omega Constellation Quartz Chronograph. The timepiece was launched to celebrate the collaboration between the brand and one of the world golf events, the Mission Hills World Cup.
The Omega Constellation Quartz Chronograph is available in two versions – either in red gold or in titanium. The cases of both versions feature the signature “claws” of the Constellation series, first introduced in 1982. The version in red gold comes with a lacquer-coated bezel, while the bezel of the sportier titanium version of the timepiece is rubber-coated.
The dial of both models has an interesting colour and structure – it was blackened by PVD coating. The black dial is a perfect background for two counters at 3 and 6 o’clock, forming a figure of eight. The dial of the Omega Constellation Quartz Chronograph also features a date display window between 4 and 5 o’clock. The hour markers and the Dauphine style hands of the watch are coated with Super-Luminova to ensure that that the watch will be glowing brightly even in the dark.
Keeping up the sporty spirit of the design, Omega offers the timepiece with a black rubber strap.

Watch With a Speaking Name: Porsche Design Worldtimer

December 30th, 2009 · No Comments

Porsche Design WorldtimerSometimes the name of a watch speaks for itself. For example, let’s take the Porsche Design Worldtimer. The “Porsche Design” part implies that the design of the watch is simple and at the same time functional – in Porsche Design watches, form is just a product of function. “Worldtimer” means that the timepiece concurrently keeps track of any two world time zones.
The Porsche Design Worldtimer was introduced at the Basel world trade show in 2007. In the same year, the watch received the iF Product Design Award, one of the world’s most prestigious awards presented annually by the Industrie Forum Design in Hannover.
This design award is well-deserved – the simple lines of the watch reveal a particular purity of genius. Made from titanium with a matte finish or titanium with PVD coating, the Porsche Design Worldtimer shows time zones in an unusual way. They are not indicated by a fourth hand at is usual in most watches. Instead, the secondary time zone is displayed via an indicator window at 9 o’clock, while another window at 3 o’clock indicates the city whose time zone was selected.
The time in the second time zone can set and adjusted via a crown at two o’clock. Pressing the button on the crown will switch time zones, and the Porsche Design Worldtimer hands will display the time in the time zone you need.
Both versions of the timepiece come with a black rubber strap with a titanium folding clasp. On the inside, the strap is decorated with a geometric pattern of latitude and longitude lines. In addition to aesthetic reasons, there are comfort-related reasons - the pattern permits air to circulate between the skin and the strap.
