A Glorious Come-back: Patek Philippe Nautilus

October 8th, 2009 · No Comments

Patek Philippe NautilusSometimes watches that were once popular make a come-back. This is true for the Patek Philippe Nautilus watch, which was first launched in 1976. Looking for inspiration for a watch with a strong personality, the watchmakers of the company found it in an unusual object – a porthole. The shape of this small window in a ship’s side turned out to be the perfect one for the case of the new model.
The original Patek Philippe Nautilus watch stunned the public. At the time, practically all luxury watches were made from gold and came with slim cases. The design of the timepiece radically departed from the norms of that time – the watch was made from stainless steel and had an unusually shaped large case. However, the unconventional design only contributed to the popularity of the Patek Philippe Nautilus.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the timepiece, the watch manufacturer introduced the new Patek Philippe Nautilus watch line. The timepieces have retained their original spirit, though their design has gone through some changes. The case of the modern watch is 1 mm larger than the case of its 1976 predecessor – it now measures 43mm instead of 42 in diameter. Probably, the watchmakers of the brand followed the recent trend for making large or extra-large cases. The new case consists of three parts – a screw-down crown and a screwed case back with a sapphire crystal exhibition window. The construction of the case guarantees water-resistance to 120 meters. The Patek Philippe Nautilus is powered by the Caliber 315 SC, a movement consisting from 220 parts and having a power reserve of 46 hours. In addition to the hours, minutes and seconds, the dial of the watch displays the date in a small window at 3 o’clock.
