Sports Timekeeping: OMEGA Olympic Collection

September 9th, 2009 · No Comments

Omega olympic collectionIn 2004, OMEGA celebrated its partnership with the Olympic Games which has lasted over 70 years by launching the OMEGA Olympic Collection. It seems that the company with the Greek name was fated to become the official supplier of the sports event originated in Greece centuries ago.
The OMEGA Olympic Collection comprises six watches, reproducing the design of the timepieces which the Biel-based watchmaking company has created for the Olympic Games between 1932 and 1960. The dials of all watches from the collection have a few common features: the time is indicated by Arabic numerals, and the name and logo of the brand are painted in red above the hands center. The seconds hand of the timepieces also points out that they belong to the OMEGA Olympic Collection: the five overlapping Olympic rings appear on its counterweight. The case back of the watches is stamped with the “Official Timekeeper” inscription, reminiscent of the OMEGA status with the Olympic Games.
The Seamaster Chronograph, which was first produced for the 1948 Olympic Games, is designed in classic color scheme: white Arabic numerals and red sub-dial hands on a black dial.
Another watch in the collection, the Speedmaster Date, lives up to its name: it is very easy to measure speed thanks to three sub-dials and a tachometer scale. Omega has also designed a version for ladies – the Speedmaster Ladies’ watch.
The Speedmaster Broad Arrow, created for the 1956 Olympics, takes its name from the arrow-shaped minute and hour hands. The OMEGA’s free sprung balance guarantees maximum accuracy of the watch.
And finally, the De Ville Co-Axial Chronograph is equipped by the OMEGA Co-Axial Escapement which makes the movement more accurate and reliable. The ladies’ version of the timepiece, the De Ville Co-Axial Chronograph Ladies’ watch, is also part of the OMEGA Olympic Collection.
