Has a beautiful woman with an exotic accent ever given you a personally engraved luxury watch? How about any woman giving you any watch? No? Well then you must not be Marlon Brando, and it must not be luxury watch crazy mid 20th century Hollywood. Celebrities of that era were known to gift engraved watches to each other back and forth, with some of the most famous timepieces eagerly being watched if they show up at auction. Why doesn’t this practice come back today? In Antiquorum’s latest “Important Collectors’ Wristwatches” auction, a 1954 Vacheron Constantin Egerie Midsize watch given by Zsa Zsa Gabor to Marlon Brando will be available.
The 18k gold cased, manually wound watch was presented to Mr. Brando on the theatrical release of “On The Waterfront,” a multi award winning movie (including best actor for Marlon Brando, and best picture), that cemented Brando as a key piece of acting talent at the time. The watch is engraved with a short message to Brando from Gabor along with the date. Pieces like this are not only important to Vacheron Constantin collectors but also to those of Hollywood memorabilia from an arguably more romantic and simple period in American Cinema. Given that the legendary Mr. Brando is no longer around, the value of this timepiece should be more than the estimated $3,000 - $5,000.
